Welcome to Newlands Pre-School  We are a community based sessional kindergarten that runs both 3 and 4yo kindergarten programs and we are managed by Merri-bek Early Years Management.  We provide the local community with a high quality early childhood educational program for children aged three to five years and offers children outstanding facilities, including a large outdoor learning environment.
Children who attend Newlands Preschool are engaged in a play-based curriculum based upon children’s emergent interests. Both indoor and outdoor activities and experiences are carefully planned to enable each child to progress in their next step in learning.  We are situated on the corner of Murray and Elizabeth St in North Coburg and nestled in a hub with Newlands Community Centre and Maternal Child Health.

Philosophy

Newlands Pre-School aims to promote a child’s positive sense of self, encourage respect for all individuals and the environment, maintain warm, friendly and safe surroundings, establish and maintain warm, open interaction with all, foster time for fun, learning and growth and take into consideration all aspects of the child’s intellectual, cultural, physical, social, emotional and creative make-up. Play is the tool for learning so we honour the child’s right to play as both a process and a context for learning. Play enhances and supports children’s development, engagement, initiative, self-worth, independence, thought provocation, inquisitiveness and curiosity. Children are intrinsically motivated to play.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is emergent as it evolves incidentally and spontaneously. It may take new, unknown paths as choices and connections are made. It is open to new possibilities. It is a journey. We maintain the consistency and security of a routine while still offering choice. The curriculum is influenced by the child’s interest, educator’s input and family participation. The seasons of the year may also contribute to the direction and content of the curriculum.  The curriculum takes into account the child’s ability, personality, style of learning, rate of development, cultural background, family structure, diversity and additional needs.  Interaction with children and their families is paramount. Open communication and developing and maintaining a trusting rapport is our objective. Working along side families and the community becomes a partnership. Being, becoming and belonging encompass children, their families, educators and the community.

Sustainability pledge

Newlands’ pre-school promotes respect for and an appreciation of the natural environment. it is committed to fostering children’s capacity to understand and respect the natural environment and the connection between people, plants animals and the land, children, educators and families engage in sustainable practices during the operation of the service. All our food scraps are given to our hungry healthy worms.
